Motherhood in 2025 is beautiful, brutal, and bewildering - often all at once. It’s full of love, yes, but also loaded with expectations, contradictions and invisible work. For some, it’s everything. For others, it’s a quiet, constant reckoning. And while the world talks more than ever about parenting, many mums still feel unseen in what they carry and how they feel. That’s why as a researcher who specialises in parenting, I’m asking one simple but powerful question:
What does it mean to be a mother to you?
Wherever you are in the world, however you parent, your voice matters. By sharing your thoughts anonymously - along with a few simple details like where you're from, how old your kids are, and your stage of motherhood - you’ll help build a living portrait of motherhood today. Each answer will become part of a growing gallery of quote cards (and imagery should you choose to share), celebrating the real, raw, and diverse experiences of mothering around the world. And to be clear YES you do belong in this conversation whether you are raising someone else's children as your own, navigating adoption or trying to become a mum. If you've lost pregnancies or couldn't have children but still feel that maternal pull, if you're a grandmother stepping in, an auntie who shows up, a sister who raises a sibling, a foster carer - your story is important. This isn’t just a study. It’s a moment to be heard. A pause to reflect. And maybe a chance to feel just a little less alone.
